 BRIEF HISTORY OF RALSTON'S CROSSING

Ralston’s Crossing is located near the intersection of 64th Ave and Indiana Str. This was once a thriving community between Golden and Leyden. Already by 1859, Ralston’s Crossing had been in existence for several years before that, but under a different town name. In 1859 the Stage Coach stop had already been constructed as well as the hotel and grocery store. Ralston’s Crossing by the year of 1859 had around 200 people living in the area of Ralston’s Crossing. With all of these people came new business’; there was a blacksmith shop, a post office, two railroad station, two churches and two schools. The post office of Ralston’s Crossing was ever changing due to flexes in mail and in population of the town. The first post office was official on March 16, 1863 (It had run several years before that date), and lasted until August 31, 1866. Postmasters during this time were George L. Strope, James E. Blake, C. Littlefield and Stephen Osborn. A post office was created eight months later on April 11, 1867, this lasting until January 21, 1870. The postmasters during this time were Milton Matthews, Francis J. McQuiston and Alford Hurst. The final attempt at resurrecting the post office was opened on April 4, 1887 and lasted until October 27, 1887. During this time George Maxwell and Matt Ekern served as the postmasters of the post office. Although the post office was gone, the town of Ralston’s Crossing wouldn’t be until 1928, when Arvada would annex the land into their town. There were three churches in Ralston’s Crossing, the Methodist Episcopal Church, which is located on Indiana Str. and W. 74th Drive, was very active before 1866, its superintendent being Stephen S. Osborn, dedicated in 1870, held Bible classes and Sunday school; the Presbyterian Church located at 7400 Indiana Street. Both churches had Sunday school.
